Először is, bemutatnád magad az olvasóknak?
A nevem Matheus. Több szóló black metal projektem is van, és ezekben általában olyan témákat kutatok, mint a természet, a magány és a kozmosz végtelensége.
Mikor kezdtél el zenét írni?
Körülbelül 16 éves koromban kezdtem el zenét csinálni, de akkoriban semmilyen felszerelésem nem volt, és fogalmam sem volt róla, hogyan működik a felvétel. Szóval csak magamnak alkottam zenét. Thrash metállal kezdtem, mert akkoriban azt hallgattam, és onnan lassan sodródtam a black metal felé.
Mikor találkoztál először a black metállal?
Erős thrash és death metal korszakom volt, de egy idő után úgy éreztem, valami hiányzik azokból a műfajokból. Egyre mélyebbre ástam az extrém zene világában, míg végül rátaláltam a black metalra és mindarra, ami körülveszi, különösen a ’90-es évek történeteire és eseményeire. Eleinte furcsának tűnt a gyenge hangminőség és a nyers, kaotikus hangzás, de nem telt sok időbe, hogy megszokjam, és elkezdjem felfedezni a különböző alműfajokat.
Mi volt az, ami miatt black metál zenész akartál lenni?
Ez az a műfaj, amit a legtöbbet hallgatok, és amivel a leginkább azonosulni tudok, amikor zenét írok. Más stílusokkal ellentétben a black metal rengeteg érzelem kifejezésére ad lehetőséget, főként a hangulata miatt. Otthon érzem magam benne, akár írom, akár hallgatom. Nehéz leírni, de aki hallgatja, az megérti.
Mesélnél az Autrest eredetéről? Hogyan indult a projekt, és mi inspirálta?
Az Autrest eredetileg gyorsabb riffekre épülő projektként indult, ellentétben a másik projektemmel, a Windveill-lel, ami inkább a melodikus billentyűs megoldásokra épít. Az Autrest a sötétebb oldalamat hivatott kifejezni, bár így is sok dallamot tartalmaz. Ez volt az eredeti elképzelés.
Mely előadók gyakorolták a legnagyobb hatást az Autrest-re?
Rengeteg atmoszférikus black metal és blackgaze zenekar hatott rám, különösen a Caladan Brood, az Ellende, az Eldamar és a Lantlôs. Ezek voltak az első zenekarok a műfajban, amikkel találkoztam, és a hatásuk természetesen beépült az Autrest-be.
Mi inspirál leginkább a zeneírás során? Költészet, természet, más zenék, vagy tiszta érzelem?
Legtöbbször tiszta érzelemből merítek inspirációt, néha egy riffből, amit írok, néha egy képből, ami a fejemben megjelenik. Gyakran egy olyan helyről van szó, ami valójában nem létezik, de elképzelem, és valahogy megpróbálom hangban kifejezni azt a látomást.
A Follow the Cold Path volt az első albumod. Mesélnél kicsit róla? Nekem személy szerint az egyik kedvencem.
A Follow the Cold Path nagyon gyorsan állt össze. Nem hiszem, hogy valaha ilyen gyorsan össze tudnék rakni még egy albumot. Ez volt az első alkalom, hogy ebben a stílusban kezdtem riffeket írni, szóval minden új volt számomra. Az egész folyamat nagyon egyszerű volt, alig négy hónap alatt megírtam, felvettem és elkészítettem. Soha nem gondoltam volna, hogy tényleg hallgatni fogja valaki. Félelem nélkül született, tisztán az akkori érzelmeim alapján.
Mesélnél kicsit az írási és felvételi folyamatról?
Jelenleg mindent otthon veszek fel. Lassú folyamat. Most is dolgozom új anyagon, de nem akarom erőltetni, akkor kell jönnie, amikor őszintén megszületik. Néha egy riffből indul, néha egy billentyűs ötletből, és onnan rétegenként épül fel, a hangulatokkal, végül pedig jönnek a vokálok.
Nemrég jelent meg a Burning Embers, Forgotten Wolves. Ez is egy csodálatos album lett. Mesélnél róla? Mennyi ideig tartott megírni?
Köszönöm. Ez az a kiadvány, amire eddig a legbüszkébb vagyok. Ahogy már említettem, lassú és igényes folyamat volt, körülbelül másfél évig tartott, mire elégedett voltam a végeredménnyel. Ezután jött a hosszú éjszakák sora: keverés, maszterelés. Mentálisan kimerítő volt, de a végeredmény mindent megért. Megfogadtam, hogy pihenek egy kicsit utána, de még most sincs olyan nap, hogy ne gondolnék a következő albumra. Ez egyfajta körforgás számomra, bármennyi időbe is telik, a végén mindig megéri.
Honnan jött az album címe? Számomra az elmúlás és az ősi emlékek érzését hordozza.
A cím természetesen született meg a készítés során. Már megvoltak az első dalok címei, és a kettő kombinációjából jött létre, tökéletesen illett az album rituális hangulatához és atmoszférájához.
Mit szeretnél, hogy a hallgatók mit érezzenek vagy értsenek meg, amikor hallgatják az albumot?
Azt szeretném, ha a hallgatók jól éreznék magukat az album hallgatása közben, ha ez egyfajta menedék lenne számukra. Ha megértenék azokat az érzelmeket, amiket közvetíteni akartam, és ha látnák maguk előtt azt a képet, amit én is láttam a fejemben, miközben alkottam, vagy bármit, ami békét ad nekik, miközben úgy érzik, elmerülnek a természetben, valahol egészen máshol.
Van kedvenc Autrest-dalod?
Általában, mire befejezek egy albumot, már gyűlölöm az összes számot (nevet), egyszerűen azért, mert napokon és éjszakákon át hallgatom őket, míg elégedett nem leszek. De van néhány, amire valóban büszke vagyok. Ha minden albumról egyet kellene választanom, az elsőről a Time Is a River-t, a legújabból pedig a Resonance-t. Ezek azok a dalok, amikre tényleg büszke vagyok, mert képesek elvinni egy másik világba, legalábbis a fejemben.
Egy szokásos kérdés. Mik a jövőbeli terveid? Várható új anyag a többi kiváló projektedhez is, mint a Windveill vagy a Dispar?
Rengeteg demóm van az Autrest-hez, és most ki kell választanom néhányat, amikből a következő album formálódhat. A Windveillhez és a Disparhoz is vannak demóim, de még nem érzem, hogy eljött az idejük. Minden természetesen történik, előbb-utóbb megjön az inspiráció, és akkor majd könnyedén, erőlködés nélkül áramlik minden.

Hi. Thank you for agreeing to this short interview, I appreciate it.
Could you start by introducing yourself to us?
My name is Matheus. I have a few solo black metal projects, and through them I usually explore themes such as nature, solitude, and the vastness of space.
When did you first begin making music?
I started making music when I was around 16, but back then I had no equipment and no idea how recording actually worked. So I created music only for myself. I began with thrash metal because that was what I listened to at the time, and slowly I moved toward black metal.
When did you first encounter black metal?
I went through a strong thrash and death metal phase, but after a while it felt like something was missing in those genres. I kept digging deeper into extreme music until I eventually discovered black metal and everything surrounding it, especially the stories and events from the 90s. At first, the low quality and the raw, chaotic sound felt strange to me, but it didn’t take long before I adapted and began exploring its different subgenres.
What was it about the genre that made you want to become a black metal musician?
It’s the genre I consume the most and the one I identify with the most when creating music. Unlike other styles, black metal allows you to express a wide range of emotions, mainly because of its atmosphere. I feel at home when I’m writing, and when I listen to atmospheric black metal. It’s hard to describe, but those who listen understand it.
Can you tell us about the origins of Autrest? How did the project begin, and what inspired its creation?
Autrest began as a project focused on faster riffs, different from my other project, Windveill, which is more centered on melodic keyboard work. Autrest was meant to express a darker side of myself, even though it still carries a lot of melody. That was the original vision.
Which artists have had the greatest influence on Autrest?
A lot of atmospheric black metal and blackgaze influenced me, especially Caladan Brood, Ellende, Eldamar, and Lantlôs. These were some of the first bands of the genre I encountered, and their influence naturally carried into Autrest.
What inspires you when writing music? Poetry, nature, other bands, or pure emotion?
Most of my inspiration comes from pure emotion, sometimes from a riff I create, sometimes from an image that appears in my mind. Often it’s a place that doesn’t exist, but that I imagine, and somehow I try to express that vision through sound.
‘Follow the Cold Path’ was your first album. Can you tell us a little about it? Personally, it’s one of my favorite album.
Follow the Cold Path came together extremely fast. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to create an album that quickly again. It was the first time I started writing riffs in this style, so everything felt new to me. The whole process was very simple, no more than four months to write, record, and produce it. I never imagined people would actually listen to it. It was created without fear, and with pure emotion based on what I was feeling at that time.
Could you share something about the recording and writing process?
I currently record everything at home. It’s a slow process. I am recording new material, but I don’t want to force myself to create; it needs to come at the right moment to be genuine. Sometimes it starts with a riff, sometimes with something I’m playing on the keyboard, and from there it slowly develops layer by layer, with ambience and the vocals come last.
Your album ‘Burning Embers, Forgotten Wolves’ was released not long ago. It’s an amazing album. Can you tell us about it? How long did it take to write it? etc.
Thank you. It’s definitely the release I’m most proud of so far. As I mentioned before, it was a slow and demanding process. It took around a year and six months of recording until I was truly satisfied with the result, and everything after that was pure production: long nights of mixing and mastering. It was mentally exhausting, but seeing the final result made it all worth it. I told myself I would take a break after this album, but even so, not a single day passes without me thinking about the next album. I guess it’s a cycle for me, no matter how long it takes, in the end it’s always worth it.
How did you come up with the name of the album? I feel like it’s full of loss and ancient memories.
The name came naturally during the creation of the album. I already had the titles of the first songs, so it became a combination of two track names, and it felt perfect for the ritualistic feeling and atmosphere the album carries.
What do you hope listeners feel or understand when they experience the album?
I hope listeners feel good when they hear the album, that it becomes a place of comfort, and that they understand the emotions I tried to express. I hope they can visualize something similar to the image I had in my mind while creating it, or anything that brings them peace while also feeling like they’re traveling somewhere else, lost in nature.
What is your favorite Autrest song, if you have one?
I usually finish my albums hating all the songs (laughs), simply because I get tired of listening to them day and night until I’m finally satisfied with the result. But there are some tracks I’m truly proud of. If I had to choose one from each album, it would be Time Is a River from the first one, and Resonance from the latest. They’re songs I’m proud to have created because of the feeling and how they transport me to another place in my mind.
A common question. What are your plans for the future? Is there any new material coming out for your other excellent projects? I’m thinking of Windveill and Dispar.
I have many demos for Autrest, and I need to choose a few to focus on so I can shape the next album. For Windveill and Dispar I also have some demos in progress, but I don’t feel it’s the right time yet to commit to them. It’s something natural, sooner or later the inspiration will arrive, and things will flow easily without me forcing it.
